Description: Long before the ball point pen or nib pens, the steel pen was developed in 1803 in Birmingham, England. Each pen had a point that was dipped into an ink well, but they dripped, so wipes were necessary. The wipe was made of a sandwich of fabric stitched together so the point could be wiped on both sides. Many pen wipes were made by children, hand-stitched into a circle. The creative school child added top pieces such as an animal or figure.
