Description: CANUTE CALISTE, 1914-2005. Naive painter famed for his idiosyncratic portrayal of Caribbean island life on Carriacou, Grenada. Though he initially painted purely for his own enjoyment while making a living as a boatbuilder and fisherman, Caliste talent was spotted in the late 1950s by a local nun and he began to sell his paintings. His folk art figures conveyed the charm and traditions of the unschooled painter. His paintings of fishing boats, cricket matches, carnival dances and sea life usually displayed a good deal of humor in his primitive style. Oil on various materials: glass, wood, scrap and pressed board. Literature: The Mermaid Wakes Paintings of a Caribbean Isle; Magazine Antiques, Jan/Feb 2016 pgs. 146-151
